Curling and ice stick shooting
The 16 rinks on the natural ice rink in Zermatt simply invite you to try your hand at curling and ice-stick shooting. Don't worry: You don't need to bring the equipment with you like our Scottish guests had to do many years ago in the Twenties. They brought granite stones with them in their luggage to make sure that they wouldn't have to go without the curling fun with the Matterhorn as a backdrop. The Curling Club Zermatt is the most successful curling club in Switzerland, and world-class curlers train on the ice in Zermatt. The most prominent curler from Zermatt itself is Diego Perren, who won Olympic Gold with the Lausanne Olympique team in 1998. One of the largest and best open air curling tournaments in Europe takes place in Zermatt in the third week of January: the Horu-Trophy. More than 60 teams from the whole of Europe take part.
