Zermatt immersed in Swiss folklore
In sunny August, Zermatt is very much being immersed in Swiss folklore and tradition with the Swiss National Day on 1 August and the big folklore festival. In addition to this, there are many things to do for the whole family. An unforgettable programme of activities can be found to suit all tastes!
Our top chef Frédéric Fischer has created a special 7-course first-of-August menu for you. Give yourself and your palate a treat on the Swiss National Day!
Things continue on the theme of Swiss tradition with the Zermatt Folklore Festival on the second weekend of August. The highlight is the big procession through Zermatt with around 1200 active participants from all over Switzerland. This festival is a unique opportunity to experience at close hand traditional Swiss customs, such as flag throwing, yodelling, folk music and traditional costumes. Of course, catering, children’s entertainment and amusement with lots of music, dancing and good spirits are also an integral part of such festivals.
Children particularly get their money’s worth in the Zermatt summer. Every Monday afternoon from 1.30 p.m. to 2 p.m. they can see the Black-Nosed Sheep Wolli at the square outside the train station. In addition, there is Wolli Summer Fun (Wolli Sommerspass) with many diverse activities on offer for children throughout July and August.
For hikers, too, the range on offer in the summer is almost unbeatable. Visit the Gornerschlucht (Gorner Gorge) or take a guided hike to the Monte Rosa Hut. Enjoy the sunrise on the Rothorn or experience summer skiing on a glacier..
